Home: My neighborhood
Local timeline: My Zip Code
Federated timeline: The Whole Friggin' World
Instances: A parallel universe/AU

@Trungles That's actually pretty good way to think about it except that the Federated timeline is the "whole known fediverse" as is only what the instance you are on knows about ;)
