drafted up an article about using #opensource in education. got perturbed hearing a family member describe the "need" for a certain brand of application as the only one that can do a common task.

it's almost as if educational institutions think that their job is to RTFM to their students instead of actually teach 'em the concepts that are meaningful to a particular field or task.

no wonder people are scared of change. how can they keep doing math if the calculator doesn't print out paper?

@K_REY_C the ability to critically evaluate technology options and make appropriate choices is a vitally important skill - even many IT professionals are unaware how often their mindset excludes potentially valuable options from consideration (whether thats FOSS, SaaS, or technology from different vertical markets that can be repurposed).

We'd love to see more courses in education address this need!

Made _some_ headway. Sneaked a lot of OSS software into place.
