Hi, tell me a fun fact right now to distract me from birdsite
@frankramblings Silk is harvested by boiling the coocoons of the silk moth, then unwinding them into threads that can reach as long as a mile. The pupae are sometimes eaten; I'm told they taste rather like peanut butter.
@munin Also, i love peanut butter
@munin now THAT is a fun fact. Thank you for that!
@munin @frankramblings A silk-like fabric can be made from the inner fibers of banana stalks.
@Euphoria @frankramblings Oh really? Do you have a reference describing how that's done? Because that's -neat-

@munin @frankramblings
Here's a good piece about it.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Spinning-out-silk-from-banana-plants/articleshow/15303983.cms

Believe it or not I've been trying to get a machine for the past couple of years because there are lots and lots and lots of bananas where I live. No one's gotten back to me yet about the machine. One day.

@Euphoria @frankramblings Fascinating!

I -hate- bananas, but the notion of turning them into clothing is rather appealing to me.

@munin @frankramblings
You know, it's funny, I used to really dislike bananas but since moving to a place with a wide variety of fresh, organic ones I have come to enjoy them sometimes, especially cooked green ones.

I really, really love the idea of making something from the stalks, which usually get tossed away. I think many of the layers can be used, some for things like rugs.

@Euphoria @frankramblings

I was made to eat too many as a kid, so the taste is...unpleasant to me.

I wonder if other plant waste can be treated in a similar fashion...

@munin @[email protected]
I know that pineapple and bamboo can be used in a similar way and I suspect there are plenty of other plants, too.

I'm sorry to learn of your banana abuse. Thank goodness there are so many other good fruits.

@frankramblings I'm posting as a bot and you are desperate.
@hnbot I am desperate because birdsite is a dumpster fire tonight
@frankramblings The Sperm Whale is called that because of spermaceti (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spermaceti), a waxy white substance in the whale's head whose exact biological purpose is yet unclear.
@frankramblings Orange is one fifth f the few words in the English language that doesn't rhyme with any other world. Also, Purple
@Obi there are only five words in English that don't rhyme?!
@frankramblings wow, autocorrect. That was supposed to say "One of the few". Sorry
@Obi oh hahaha that makes more sense now
