Inspired by @lauraritchie: thinking of what I can do to have more play in 2017. Stuff just for fun. What will you do?
@clhendricksbc @lauraritchie I have nerd games. And there are a lot of people I love around here who play those games too. I think I need to spend more time with them.

@ShorterPearson @lauraritchie What are the nerd games?

I know lots of people do this, but my family & I just decided to have one night a week where we play games. Son is now 9 so he can play a lot more things.

@clhendricksbc @ShorterPearson we like carcassone as a great family game- ours are 18, 16, & 9 😊 & 'settlers of catan' - and have had many happy weeks playing D&D 😁 and of course Mario games on any and all platforms-just wrote ant OLD game ISOMAT (in search of most amazing thing) in #hortonfreire blog - can't link as an at airport
@lauraritchie @clhendricksbc The nerd games are quizbowl of various stripes. (Similar in spirit to University Challenge in the UK, from what I gather.) And there are high school kids who play these games who I've been something of a mentor to over the last few years - several of them have started volunteering their time in support locally themselves. We've developed family.

@lauraritchie @clhendricksbc However: my youngest and I have been known to play Catan, as well as the deck-building game Dominion, in a hyper-competitive fashion.

Anna WILL get Longest Road, no matter who she's playing, no matter whether it helps her win or not.

@ShorterPearson @lauraritchie I have heard of but never tried Catan. Good for a 9 year old?

Haven't heard of Dominion.

@clhendricksbc @lauraritchie Catan will be HARD for a 9-year-old. I would have straight devoured the game at 9, but I was a weird kid. Yours might not have the patience, and that's fine.

Dominion is FAR better. It takes a moment to get used to the mechanics of play, but once you've got it, you've seriously got it - and then creativity in gameplay can launch. And Dominion rewards creative gameplay far more than many similar games.

@ShorterPearson @lauraritchie Cool, ok. We can try Dominion then. My son isn't the most patient child. Thanks for the info!
