I'm considering setting aside the compute resources to host some small salon-sized (say 16 user) instances to see how well they develop.

I would be willing to set up and host ~10 of these as an experiment, and would commit to both operating them for at least a year and to making them as easy to move as possible should a particular salon decide they'd prefer to self-host.

I would like to offer either postActiv or Mastodon servers for this at the salon's choice.

Would there be interest?

To be clearer, this would be a "bring your guests" situation - I would not have an account on each.

I would also expect you'd bring a (sub) domain, although I have a few domains I could offer a subdomain on if a group needed one.

Okay, there's plenty of interest it seems.

I will start putting together some infrastructure and some clear terms of service, etc. and get my ducks in something approximating a line and then I'll figure out how to get people set up.

I'll document the setup so others can play with similar structures beyond my ability to foot the blood sweat and tears ;)

@djsundog If you decide to go through with this, I for sure know some folks that would be interested.
@ajr cool cool - so long as I don't come up with some major reason this is a horrible idea for me to do, I'll probably put together some system to start this up over the next week - I'll ping you :)
@djsundog I...think the biggest issue with that is that Fails typically needs 2GB minimum and Mastodon won't run well unless you put even more than that in (although it'd be interesting to know how well Mastodon scales per-user.)
@Aerdan I'm betting that I can consolidate various components pretty efficiently - 160 users worth of posts will have a single postgres server still pretty sleepy regardless of whether or not its serving as one instance or ten, I figure...and I can afford to be off by a fair bit and not have to eat any crow... ;)
@djsundog Hm. Well, I've got a couple domains I could donate to that, assuming someone wants to run a furry instance (meinu.ninja or canine.top).
@djsundog super intrigued by this idea! i have a domain that i'd like to spawn a subdomain for, and some vague thoughts about what i could do with this; can you keep me in the loop?
