@jd this is just so frustrating and upsetting to me. most of the people that i have worked with in the tech industry are absolutely wonderful people who adamantly rally against prejudice of any kind (well, except maybe when it comes to PHP or Windows). where do these people work? i have to wonder if it isn't a particular segment, as most of the tech people i know are #opensource and/or #linux folks.

@wxl @jd no, it's an overwhelming phenomenon. The people you say are wonderful may in fact be part of the problem - you don't really notice it if you're not a *target*. A lot of this is insidious and subtle.

@wxl @jd @creatrixtiara is right; the only person you can speak for is you yourself.

As technologists we need to admit that our profession is full of disrespect and bias, and work towards making it inclusionary. Saying "it doesn't happen here" is only useful if you're one of the targets of that bias.

Saying "I don't condone or tolerate that behaviour and will work with those who report it happening to me to ensure it will be handled" is much more useful.

@creatrixtiara @jd oh that's not what i'm saying at all. it has to exist. and i've certainly seen it exist in different places, including from prominent people in the linux/FOSS community.

i guess all i'm saying is that in my personal experience, the people i know in tech are already marginalized in some way, so they're already sensitive to bullying/harassment. that doesn't make them immune to participating in it, but at least they try to be cognizent.

@jd @creatrixtiara just to further clarify, what i'm frustrated and upset about is not the tech community getting blamed for something its not guilty of, but the fact that it exists.

@jd I am not sure talking with people who left their jobs is a good measurement ... but yes, sexual harassment is sadly all too common. Not just in the technology industry. More should definitively be done.
