One thing I do enjoy about Mastodon is the expanded character limit. 500 characters seems to be the perfect amount to express a thought while preventing a full essay about a topic. It's a very nice middle ground.
Totally agree, @jlward 500 chars is enough to facilitate conversations, but curtail walls-o-text, manifestos, and extended rants. Although I worry that including images will soon undermine all that and slide us into the dark, yawning pit.
@Jefferson the 500 character limit even works for walls of text. Visit @dredmorbius profile. He has written several related posts and having them broken up by the character limit actually makes for an enjoyable read. There's just enough there to digest before moving onto the next thought.

I freely admit the form plays more to the writer than the reader. And ... have written a tootstorm to that effect as well.
