@voidnill but is that based on the usercount and geolocation of the *instance* rather than that of the actual user?
For instance I could be on there as 🇩🇪 or 🇳🇱 when I am in fact based in 🇬🇧

@voidnill @vfrmedia I presume it's based on location of instance, not of users. I have not heard of any system within Masto that collects and broadcasts user's IPs or Geo info.

If there is such a system I'd like to know!

A few weeks ago there were very few instances, and most good ones were in Europe. So new users just signed up on whatever instance was available.

I'm in the US but on a 'de' instance.

@teleclimber @voidnill from reading discussions (that admittedly I do not understand all of) about other tech issues I think the system is set up to delberately make this difficult and grant the endusers some privacy against tracking/geolocation. So these counts are likely to always reflect the geography of the users instance rather than their actual location.
