Olivier Forget@voidnill @vfrmedia I presume it's based on location of instance, not of users. I have not heard of any system within Masto that collects and broadcasts user's IPs or Geo info.
If there is such a system I'd like to know!
A few weeks ago there were very few instances, and most good ones were in Europe. So new users just signed up on whatever instance was available.
I'm in the US but on a 'de' instance.
@teleclimber @voidnill from reading discussions (that admittedly I do not understand all of) about other tech issues I think the system is set up to delberately make this difficult and grant the endusers some privacy against tracking/geolocation. So these counts are likely to always reflect the geography of the users instance rather than their actual location.

@Grrr J'ai un souci avec ce décompte, il ne prend en compte que la localisation des instances. Or il y a des Fr et des US sur mastodon.social (All), des Jp sur des instances non-Jp, etc. ;)

Now there's 11 people in Switzerland. But I still haven't found how the identify the swiss instance(s). Is the instances lists with geoip resolution public?
@voidnill Interestingly, in the instances lists, there this one: social.glados.ch With a swiss TLD. But it's server is in France. That make 160 'french' users, who could be new-zealanders, who knows! 😄
@voidnill and this one: https://mon.keypat.ch also with a .ch TLD, obviously not related to CH. :) IP is .uk, maybe south-africaners users.
