One of the things that I'm split on with Mastodon is with choosing an instance. I like the idea of smaller communities that are focused while still having access to the fediverse, but also fear losing my entire account should that smaller instance fold. I don't want to rely on the future possibility of account transfers when deciding now, since it's not guaranteed.

It would be painful to see years worth of interactions disappear because an admin couldn't run that server anymore.
