Because the topic came up, I'm tempted to say something about it:

Roko's Basilisk is a spook and only works if you take it seriously :^)

@KitRedgrave I find myself unable to take it seriously at all. Such an entity would not need to resort to torture to bring about its goals - it could just rewrite preferences in the entities it simulates so they'd naturally 'want' to bring about what it wants.
@KitRedgrave That'd be a hell of a lot less work and be ever so much more efficient; you'd have to be pretty foolish to resort to torture in that instance.
@munin @KitRedgrave yeah, it's not a very convincing piece of logic to me either
why expend all this energy doing something that could be accomplished in 'cheaper' ways

@munin yep. maybe it'd involve ponies too :P

ok ok i'll stop memeing. yeah. anything smart enough to be able to simulate people well enough to know what they're thinking before they do could easily already win.

we should hope that it would have such a considerate utility function, anyway

@KitRedgrave i take it very seriously
@kitredgrave > Roko's Basilisk is a spook

Is THAT where @jephjacques got the idea!?
@pettter @Jephjacques i don't know the context there, so i can't say
@kitredgrave A (relatively) minor character in @jephjacques webcomic Questionable Content is named Roko, is and is a cop that is also a robot/AI (see here: http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3426).

As for my post, it mostly a stupid joke on cop/spook/roko/contextswitches.

Also that it's fun that Jeph is on Mastodon.
