@Euphoria I'd be careful with this. When I talked about the 500 characters limit on Mastodon, I talked about Mastodon, that's what I meant. I wasn't talking about the underlying protocol or the extended federation of non-Mastodon OStatus-implementing instances.

Federation is also nice in the sense that instances can cluster themselves around (m)any axis. If a majority of instance admins decide not to federate with instances not respecting 500char, well…

@vhf Very interesting. I can see just from reading this that I am totally unqualified to even consider hosting an instance, even if I /had/ the resources to do so. Heck, I'm too lazy to figure out how to create a macro for this :smiley_cat:

Sometimes I really miss the old me.

@Euphoria I was discussing federation/politics here, I'm sure you're qualified! :)

My point was: Say you admin an instance with a 2000 character limit. Other instance admin or other instances' users don't like getting these very long messages. It would be an arguably legitimate reason to blacklist your instance. The blacklist button is in the mastodon admin interface. And it's not crazy to think people might want to stick to 500 for a while.

@vhf Hey, thank you very much for expanding on this. You make some excellent points and I suppose that it's possible that there might be some instances that will actually /want to/ be blacklisted by others to make them more exclusive.

Besides, it's easy enough to reply to one's own Toot if one wants to expand on something that's more than 500 characters long.
