Hacked one of my Mastodon instances to offer a 1024 character limit for flash fiction. Small tweak, but wondering if it might interest some writerly folks if I open registration eventually https://flashfic.stream/@lmorchard
Playing with content warnings as titles, but stories need content warnings too sometimes
Might think about some other tweaks, too. The old Ficlet site I liked had the concept of users collaborating with prequels & sequels to stories along with comments & ratings. Might not all mesh well with an OStatus kind of thing, but could be fun to play with
@lmorchard Buddy, quitter.no already offer 1000 chars. Some others even offer illimited.
@dragnucs The character limit isn't really the main thing here
@lmorchard Personally, I'm really enjoying the 500 character limit, I'm learning a great deal from it.
@Nezchan I mostly picked 1024 because it's what Ficlets used to have, and I had fun there
@lmorchard I don't want to go down to 140, but 500 is pretty extreme compared to what I've been doing. I'm planning to work mainly on those and 750-word pieces for a couple of months, see where that takes me.
@lmorchard 1024 limit or 1024 requirement?
@vielmetti Limit, but maybe also challenge. Not requirement though
@lmorchard perhaps you can set something up to automatically boost or otherwise mark toots that hit that kilocharacter goal.
@lmorchard Cool! Have you tested if other instances reading from the federation see all 1024 characters?
@lmorchard will toots of that length federate?
@Joe Sure. Other OStatus sites already have much larger character limits

@lmorchard i'd be tempted to subdomain it ... {200,500,1k,novella,...}.flashfic.stream ... hack the backend so accounts are the same on all but the accepted postlength differs.

otoh that would be crazy.

@lmorchard are you worried at all about those toots going through the fediverse or needing CWs?
@phildini Not really. Some sites in the fediverse have no char limits and some don't honor CWs at all
@lmorchard how is it going to look on other servers and in different clients?

@lmorchard Years ago I participated in a site that used, IIRC, a 300 word limit for body, and a 3 word limit for title. It was intended for small poetry, but I was using it for microfiction, and it was, like haiku/sonnet/diamante/limerick, an interesting new-game-plus take on fiction for me.

I think I might be very interested.

(If you want verification I'm the author I say I am, I might still be interested. And that's saying something, with my tendency towards privacy.)

@sydneyfalk Seems like I've got some interest in this thing! Thinking I'm going to tweak the instance a little more and at least throw an initial CoC at it, then let a few folks know when I open up registration and see who shows!
