GNOME vs KDE: Best Desktop? - Datamation

In the debate about whether GNOME or KDE is the best Linux desktop, factors like workflow, software and user preferences are essential to consider.

@therealmatthartley fvwm2, doncha know!๐Ÿ˜‚

@therealmatthartley @Glenn fvwm2 does not count , and as Gnome is counter intuitive KDE wins by default.

in spite of its many (many) failings KDE is the better full DE

@JaseEW @therealmatthartley Doesn't count?! Of course it does... As much as all these pretentious DEs do๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‚
@therealmatthartley @JaseEW mind you, Matt asks "best Desktop" not Desktop Environment, so any ol' thing could be construed to fit that bill. So I'm (very) slightly serious... Any collection of applications including a wm might be dubbed a desktop ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚
@therealmatthartley @Glenn ahh ok the criteria widens , The best DE would still stand as KDE for the reasons above. and while fvwm2 can look awesomeโ€‹ if time and patience are taken over its configuration, for me the simplicity of DWM that would win out . with Ratpoison close behind
@JaseEW @therealmatthartley Ow, not ratpoison... When I had a spat of minimalism, I used to do evilwm. Then went through a slew of wms like openbox, enlightenment, fluxbox... And had a very long period using fvwm2 exclusively. Still love it, but since I'm a sysadm (=lazy the right way) I usually make do with whatever comes with the distro๐Ÿ˜„

@Glenn @therealmatthartley Ratpoison is a great WM! , as is DWM , I used FVWM back in 2011 even found a screenie of my configuration (below) which was part of a community remaster I did in my pre archlinux user days. (it had multiple minimal wm's blackbox, uclidwm, fluxbox, icewm, nwm twm, windowmaker, wmii and others iirc)

@therealmatthartley KDE is better than gnome but i prefer Xfce, MATE or I3

@therealmatthartley I'll go with Gnome, just to throw a wrench into the works.

I used to absolutely HATE KDE, but it's become a workable DE in the last 5 years or so. Still prefer Gnome over it though.

@therealmatthartley @mike I'm with you, Mike. I like Gnome better than KDE but I use Xfce. Imagine where Gnome would be if Canonical had not gone on their Unity boondoggle and put all that effort into improving Gnome.
@therealmatthartley at this moment awesomewm tomorrow kde yesterday gnome. But that's what makes linux so great, I get to choose, as often as I like.
