These observations, as well as the course of lectures of Sapir heard by Whorf, led to the development of the views of his teacher and formulated the hypothesis of linguistic relativity (the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis), thanks to which he gained world fame. According to this hypothesis, in humans the picture of the world is largely determined by the system of language in which they speak. The grammatical and semantic categories of language are not only tools for conveying the speaker's thoughts, but also govern the thinking activity, forming the ideas of the person. Thus, it is assumed that people who speak different languages ​​will have different perceptions about the world, and in the case of significant structural discrepancies between their languages, when discussing certain topics, interlocutors may have difficulty understanding.
