In the 1920s, the American linguist Edward Sapir put forward the hypothesis that it is not reality that determines the language in which it is spoken of, but, conversely, the very perception of reality is mediated by language . Sapir wrote: People live not only in the objective world of things and not only in the world of social activity, as is commonly believed; they are largely influenced by that particular language, which is a means of communication for a given society. It would be a mistake to believe that we can fully understand reality without resorting to language, or that language is a by-product of solving some particular problems of communication and thinking. In fact, the "real world" is largely unconsciously built on the basis of the language norms of this group ... We see, hear and generally perceive the surrounding world in this way, and not otherwise, mainly because our choice in its interpretation is predetermined by linguistic habits of our society.
