Heh....y'know, it occurs to me - we're likely -not- to see some of the nastier irritants on mastodon compared to birdsite - there's no real impetus to add in click fraud for ad impressions, so that motivation for bot traffic is pretty much nonexistent.

And if follower count remains somewhat opaque between instances, ego-boosting via fake followers is not likely to happen either.

There's some rather interesting implications amongst all this, aren't there?

@munin its quite refreshing, I think.
@da_667 Oh aye. I'm enjoying myself over here thoroughly - barely touched birdsite this week. Haven't looked at it on mobile at all.
@munin @da_667 I still have a few people over there that I check in, but it's been so few check ins, I don't even have a tab open for it right now which I normally have open all the time. Feels both weird and nice.
@Technogen @munin I have both tabs up, currently. Too many good contacts over there (tm). But I'm checking in on my phone less and less.
@da_667 @Technogen I leave a message now and then over there, but, at least for now, here's where I feel like sticking.
@munin @Technogen it makes sense. your instance is yours and you control it. I like that. a lot.
@Technogen @munin don't like ToS/CoC? Roll your own.
@da_667 @munin @Technogen Get banned for being a dick to users? Roll your own. Automagic federation. Dynamic ephemeral webscale shitposting instances in order to enhance the customer experience by facilitating authentic conversations.
@Technogen @munin @da_667 All I'm saying is that with spider-like powers comes great responsibility, unfortunately.
@dade @da_667 @Technogen I'm going to end up having to implement federative greylisting ain't I ;-)
@munin @da_667 @Technogen It's one of the most interesting things I see potentially facing this platform if it grows to be quite popular. It's a lot harder to stop abuse when anyone can jump in even after banned. It'd probably only take a weekend to have a docker image of this that anyone could quickly spin up whenever their instance gets banned.

@dade @da_667 @Technogen Well, yeah. Or even just for the purpose of temporary instances.

But hell, it's not that hard to build a greylisting schema....hell, just throwing foghorn onto the box and pushing its DNS through that would have the desired effect of countering fast-flux instance federation.

@munin @da_667 @Technogen See, after seeing that skytalk I knew you'd have a feasible blueteam solution :)
@dade @da_667 @Technogen Well, yeah. I've been pondering the implications of temporary mastodon instances [on both sides] for days now - like, consider, spinning one up for protests or summat. Temporary C2 for managing protest ops; coordinating actions; avoiding kettling and the like.
@munin @dade @Technogen theres some hubub over federation blacklisting right now. This seems like it would be a solution for federation /whitelisting/ in the future.
@da_667 @dade @Technogen Nowt wrong with that, eh?
@munin @da_667 @dade @Technogen It'd make things harder for small-fish latecomers.
@geofurb @da_667 @dade @Technogen For the first couple days while they build trust, yes.
@Technogen @da_667 @dade Or build a module into the thing to delay acceptance of follows, etc., from instances that haven't been up for long enough. Or any number of other ways.

@da_667 @Technogen Precisely.

And oddly enough, I've had several people explicitly say they'd rather have -me- administer an instance than anyone else. Kind of flattering that they have that kind of confidence in me :-)
