Isn't it, the entire failure of social networks that bring us to a new one? Or is it just idle curiosity.

How did you find out about this place? #Mastodondiscovery

@Michael_Spencer First heard about it from a piece on Medium. Decided to join after I started seeing posts about it from people I actually know. Stayed because I found others I didn't know were here.
@CallKathy Well if the cool kids on Medium are saying it's good...it's good enough reason for me too.

@Michael_Spencer I've been yearning for an alternative to ad-tech, data-harvesting centralized networks for a long time, but the network effect makes it hard to leave FB/Twitter.

I used to run a podcast called Flipping Tables and one episode we spent a whole hour fantasizing about something like Mastodon (not just OSocial).

The second I became aware of Mastodon, I was like "SOMEONE DID IT!" and joined immediately.

In short: shit was broken I just didn't know I had an option!

@pseudomichael That's deep Michael, yes I know what you mean. FB/Twitter and even for me LinkedIn are like necessary evils at times. How old is this place anyhow?
@Michael_Spencer I read about it on Twitter, ironically enough. I like seeing a diversity of technology, not silos of people - so I'm happy to encourage this kind of thing.
@diodesign Thanks Chris, certainly is an interesting experiment.
@Michael_Spencer others lacks what this one have... there is also a lot of French people, even if I don't understand French it's high cosmopolitan. Although they fight me today when I asked them to write in English. They are sensitive persons I think :(
@johann I did not know that. French you say, I wouldn't mind to know more about the demographics of this place.
@Michael_Spencer sorry, I left from that main idea. Well are you an investigator or something? I am an observer of people's behavior. And everyone here is open and relax. I included. I think people here feel less controlled.

@Michael_Spencer I read some news articles about it and decided to try it out. If I find other people on here who share my interests, I'll probably stick around.

I definitely like the 500 character limit over Twitter's 140 character limit.

@gclaugus That's so true Gavin, in the back of my mind I'm wondering what a 500 character post would feel like. What are your interests?
