Hi: @gargon and everyone: take a look at this whitepaper I wrote with a DC think tank. How many of these ideas do you think could be built into #mastodon? #mastodev

Esp: 1. that any full #bots need to register and are marked as bots

2. That any scripted posts need to identify as "posted by a robot"

Would seem we could light the way and show what it would look like to do things that Twitter has not, and is invested by bots and such as a result.

A Primer on Social Media Bots And Their Malicious Use In U.S. Politics

This full paper is in PDF format, and can be found through the links in the text below or at the bottom of the page.  Tens of millions of malicious bots – automated accounts programmed to tweet or post in a manner masquerading as humans – infest our social media platforms, and many are being used deceptively for political purposes.

Also: would be very interested in ways that Mastodon could be made a better place for non-malicious bots and a worse place for malicious ones.
Circling back: having returned to Mastodon after a bit. Has there been any work on how to encourage better non-malicious bots and discourage-reduce malicious ones on the platform? cc: @[email protected] #mastodon #mastodev
To #Mastodev folks - any thoughts? What is the best way I can recommend some of these features for consideration?
@Tchambers it would be also be nice perhaps to be able to mark an account as “may or may not be a bot” for those of us doing Turing tests 😀
