So, wait, remind me why I should ever use FB/Twitter ever again? What are they giving me for the value they extract from me? Anything I can't find elsewhere without being harvested for crappy targeted ads?
@pseudomichael The people on those networks, if they don't join here. Assuming you value the people in your networks there. ;)
@arthaey ah yes, it's a giant stockholm syndrome situation. "We got yer friends! Don't you like it here!?"
@pseudomichael So many awakenings these days. It's nice.
@pseudomichael Just in case this is actually a serious inquiry:

Not everyone on Twitter/Facebook is on OStatus (yet - pushing for federation isn't a bad idea).

It's kinda hard to share video.

App support is lacking for OStatus

Some/most instances are kinda slow, and federation isn't exactly immediate (though this is a shared problem with Twitter/Facebook, they're just better at hiding it).

DMs aren't there yet.

The Facebook/birdsite UX/UI isn't half bad, and has a lot of things still missing on most OStatus instances There's _years_ of research and work by multimillion teams that's gone into those things, and it shows if you know where to look.

Outreach for organisations, bands, photographers, artists, writers, politicians etc. etc. etc. is magnitudes larger and easier on FB/birdsite.

Still, it's definitely up to you if your data is worth all that.
@pseudomichael @pettter its ok to be hard to share video. that's what links are for.
@thegibson @pseudomichael ..but the thing is that it's something that both the birdsite and FB does better than any OStatus implementation that I'm aware of.

And it's a thing that some people value, even if you don't.

@pseudomichael @pettter Understood, but ultimately we are discussing what the goal is? decentralization? Then I would think say links are best and let each service do what it does well... adding services to this model injures it's value.

Good engineering is not achieved when there is nothing left to add... but when there is nothing left to take away.

@thegibson Wait what? No, the question was:
"So, wait, remind me why I should ever use FB/Twitter ever again? What are they giving me for the value they extract from me? Anything I can't find elsewhere without being harvested for crappy targeted ads?"

So "sharing/hosting/posting video" is one of those things that you get in exchange for your data when using FB/birdsite.

If you want to shift the discussion to something else ("the goal".. for who/what?), then sure, but I'd appreciate if you'd be explicit about it.

@pettter My apologies, I missed the earlier posts... came in on yours.

You are correct... although I'd still like this to not turn into either of those networks.

@thegibson Sure, but the nice thing about OStatus is that both you and people who want to share video can coexist in the network, both using sites that cater to your wants and needs. Federation FTW!
@pettter more or less... as long as the UI stays minimalist overall.
@thegibson *your UI. Remember - federated!
@TheGibson @pettter on the other side, Facebook has such a hard on for pushing video at me that every video is a huge playlist of autoplay videos I didn't ask for, a giant tab at the top of the app for Stories (which are videos ripe for advertising-sponsored "filters"), and a host of other design decisions that are more about the bottom line than making me happy.
@pseudomichael network effect. That is literally their only unique feature. All other tech is copied if it's good anyway.
@pseudomichael I hear ya. Only thing keeping me on FB these days is uploading kid photos for family and messaging my D&D group to organize our next session. Haven't been on Twitter for ages.
@pseudomichael
well, fb has an awesome event planner tool, and every other calendaring thing that tried to do it git infected with enterpriseitis.
