(i.e. Is there an official spec for federation if I want to build my own server?) Matrix seemed to have a much sounder footing there, and be useful for a wider range of applications...

james@jballanc @plexus on the topic of Matrix, it's sometimes come up in issues threads: "Hey, Matrix has this feature all covered, maybe we should be using their protocol" but it needs someone willing to throw the energy at a bridge to GNUSocial, which to date has not been any of the devs. the spec for GS mostly builds on OStatus, which is documented but some of the involved documents are old enough to have gone missing. at least that's what everyone who has tried tells me
