I'm not convinced Mastodon should allow editing... it's a harder problem to solve then it seems. What happens if you edit a post 5,000 people have boosted and change the message to something they don't agree with?
@randomhappening I think the solution with editing is to also provide the whole revision history of the toot, not just an "edited" marker.

@uhandrew I was thinking that. Works for factual corrections (i.e. like a newspaper: "Previously we stated X, and it is actually Y"), but makes the standard edit/typo fix super expensive (i.e. "Previously we spelled Potatoe instead of Potato"). For those, just marking and locking out changes over time like @zee mentioned might be better.

Or am I misunderstanding and you mean more like looking up previous toot version like version control / source control?

@randomhappening I mean the version control thing. Others would be able to see all previous versions/edits.

I'm not at all familiar with OStatus or anything though so not sure if it's possible/easy.

@randomhappening Agree. delete it and repost if you want to "edit" it
@randomhappening I've heard lots of proposals for edits on Twitter. Like: only editable for 30 seconds or allows versions, but you can always get back to the original.
@randomhappening mastodon.social owner said editing will not happen
@randomhappening post editing is a terrible idea anywhere
@randomhappening Immutable edits. You can update to your preferred message content, but any updated message also carries its history around and anyone can see that. Some people will still try to exploit the system, but with the history readily available it's an annoyance at worst.
