I'm reading @sarahjeong's story about Mastodon and completely relating to her description of twitter addiction.

"Is the Merriam-Webster dictionary subtweeting the president today? I wish I knew, so I could pretend to not care. I am scum and don't deserve mastodon.social. But here I am."

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/mastodon-is-like-twitter-without-nazis-so-why-are-we-not-using-it

@sarahjeong @micahflee this one got me: "My relief at being on a social network that Julian Assange does not post on is almost perfectly counterbalanced by my regret that I cannot troll him."

Replace Assange with who/whatever, but the stream of interactive participation and commentary on 🐦 site is interesting and engaging (whether real or imagined). Perhaps federation can address both--distance and connection.

@micahflee @sarahjeong I can't help but feel like there's a way to be silly snarky and obsessed with political news and still be nice, conscientious of triggers, and not a nazi.

I have hope yet that some social network (or maybe mastodon instance) with that as a focus could exist, but in the meantime 🐘🐥

"Mastodon Is Like Twitter Without Nazis, So Why Are We Not Using It?"

Judging from the graphical interface of Mastodon, we can safely assume that the Nazis did not yet exist in the space-time from where this thing has been launched...

@sarahjeong @micahflee

Jumped on Mastodon based on @sarahjeong article. Quasi-serious nerd (ubuntu user, etc) and I still find it all to be a little confusing. (I picked an instance at random. Can I change? Do I bring my name? etc). Googling hasn't turned up a great faq that goes beyond the initial "getting started" qs. Any recs?
