wow my article was so misleading to focus on the no-nazis rule when that's only a rule on the FLAGSHIP INSTANCE that is controlled by the CORE DEVELOPER of the software
@sarahjeong it was a prime example of how an instance can enforce a CoC in stark contrast to Twitter's. It's a key selling point for me.
@sarahjeong Turn in your badge & gun. You're on suspension, jeong

@sarahjeong

"Mastodon Is Like Twitter Without Nazis, So Why Are We Not Using It?"

Judging from the graphical interface of Mastodon, we can safely assume that the Nazis did not yet exist in the space-time from where this thing has been launched...

@sarahjeong <shrug> Still enjoyed the article.

@sarahjeong I think the backlash comes more from the non-mastodon fediverse members that have apparently had issues with said founder in the past, but maybe I'm wrong as I'm not aware of what specific backlash this is in reference to :relaxed:

Personally I find it sort of irrelevant to the story in terms of the sudden popularity but I suppose I understand where they're coming from.

@Thracky @sarahjeong There is definitely some beef. I think it might be due to gargron dragging them kicking and screaming into usability.
@krainboltgreene @sarahjeong @Thracky there are some legitimate technical "disagreements" AFAICT, but the social divide seems even wider
@sarahjeong Yeah, we're all over here because of the 140+ character limits and nothing more. ;)
@sarahjeong unless you require a bunch of overhead to join the federation (and they don't) i don't see how really any rules can be enforced at the end of the day

@sarahjeong Personally, I think it was a great article, and an open-eyed introduction to this nascent community. You'd probably have to go back and revise your article every day, just to try and keep up with the evolving shape, tone and topology of Mastodon.

I've shared your article (gasp!) on FB, and suspect it will generate even more registrations.

@sarahjeong If that's any consolation a lot of big instances are French for now, so the rule should legally apply over most of Mastodon anyway.
@sarahjeong the liberal media strikes again! :joy:
@sarahjeong you are the problem with mastodon 😬
But, @sarahjeong:
Β· a core developer that *chose* to develop code to be freely run in a federated ecosystem β€” not a new walled garden or a new Mastodon-only federation, not even with some license carrying ToS/CoC restrictions for deployment;
Β· a flagship instance that is not supposed to have the privilege of being THE primary site in such a federation, not even a primary privileged node in the Mastodon subset of the federation, except as a sample/reference running instance of the Mastodon code
Actually, @sarahjeong , it wouldn't be surprising for any such "flagship" site β€” in its role as a core example of deployment of a piece of software β€” to opt for particularly restrictive ToS, avoiding risks for itself/the author in relevant jurisdictions.
But the ToS/CoC bait in your title, @sarahjeong (and beyond) is not of the essence in the federation.And the nature of this as a federation IS of the essence for an email-like open adulthood of micro-blogging (no longer Twitter-the-company).
I can understand how some view the restrictions in the flagship site as a virtue, @sarahjeong, and I'm not against pointing that out. This federation affords such bubbles, not just one but many diverse ones, with much more agility than Twitter-the-company, without having to impose the restrictive wishes of some on everyone.
Having said that, and living in Portugal: Europe sorely lacks an equivalent of the US First Amendment ("American free speech fundamentalism", in the words of many lawmakers, judges and alleged journalists, this side of the pond): sad to read yet another article somehow cheerleading our European borked "freedom of expression", @sarahjeong β€” maybe not your intention; maybe not just my perception.
"may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society". Freedom-but, broken by design.
