It looks like someone might suddenly understand the potential benefit to exposing the full "@[email protected]" #webfinger (both off-site and on-site): makes #federation a visible foundation of one's site.
@lnxw48a1 Mastodon does expose the @ domain part everywhere except text of the toots (where it's shortened), so I'm not sure what you mean (unless you're talking about GS?)
@gargron Both, actually. That text is what people see most of the time, so hiding part of the webby is a mistake. It was a mistake when Identica did it (leading to one super-node whose users had little understanding that they could use other nodes and how to interact with such nodes). Federation is the strength of our network. Our projects should put that front and center, where everyone will see it. https://nu.federati.net/attachment/17236
@lnxw48a1 @Gargron Hmm. What if masto put the favicon for a site (cached, probably) on people's avatars the way BTweetdeck does the blue check? <futzes with GIMP> Something like so: https://mastodon.social/media/Gp95hDmUYObURFMGcVs
@Gargron @lnxw48a1 (Because I do find myself hovering over usernames to find out what instance they're on.)
@Gargron @lnxw48a1 Combining this with thoughts about migrating identity across instances: the social ramifications of what happens when a second instance duplicates all of an identity's statuses and profile info, and begins posting to the public timeline. :grimacing:
