I'm loving #Mastodon so far. However, I'm finding myself joining extra instances all over the place to find people in the same niches I like. It's frustrating, and I feel one of the big limitations of Mastodon that may force it to hit a glass ceiling eventually. Unless someone has a better way of doing things? How do you folks discover new people, do you just stick to the federated timeline?
@kevq I tend to stick to the local timeline because the people here are awesome, but periodically I'll venture out to the federated timeline and find people interesting enough to follow, and that brings in all the people they boost and so on. Getting started can be hard, but I vastly prefer it to ever other platform I've tried, barring IRC, of course.

@kevq I stick to the federated timeline and poke at other users follow lists.

The cool thing is once you follow a user your 'home' instance will start picking up their toots and boosts.

As the instance grows in users (and by proxy people followed) the amount of visibility into the network greatly improves.

It's a bit rough going initially but over time things can expand nicely.

@kevq Well the idea is instances were topic specific it just didn't work out that way but if you follow the timeline people come along.

@omnipotens yeah, I'm finding that the more I put in to finding the best people to follow across multiple instances, the more I'm getting from Mastodon. I am finding myself using it more than any other social platform. I love the focus you can have on it.

Better yet, I still haven't seen a single photo of someone's cat or dinner!

@kevq lol Damn I need to go take a picture of my cat real quick lol. You will get plenty of cats and crap from some instances. Good thing you can block them 😁
