20 REASONS TO ABOLISH THE EUROPEAN BORDER GUARD FRONTEX

1. Since 2014, over 29,442 people have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, where Frontex operates covering the European sea borders.

2. Frontex communicates the position of migrant boats to Libyan militias who abduct people at sea and force them into torture camps.

3. Frontex has coordinated the deportation of 104,000+ people from Europe since 2006.

4. Frontex has coordinated deportation flights in which people have been tortured.

5. Frontex is complicit in the outsourcing of border control to countries on the African continent, for example through the Africa-Frontex Intelligence Community network which has 30+ African states as members.

6. Frontex has been recruiting an army of border guards who can own and use hand-guns, and aims to have 10,000 guards by 2027.

7. Frontex is complicit in illegal and life-threatening pushbacks of people from Greece to Turkey. Since 2020, more than 2000 such incidents have taken place.

8. Frontex has cooperated with national border guards in Hungary, Bulgaria, and Greece that pepper sprayed and beat people with night-sticks, and chased them through forests with dogs.

9. Frontex has increasingly close ties with the arms and security industry. It often attends industry lobby meetings, and uses its own growing budget to buy equipment.

10. Frontex facilitates EU countries’ acquisition of surveillance and border control technology and products by acting as a middleman between EU member states and defence and security corporations.

11. Through its “risk” analysis reports, Frontex depicts migration as a threat that needs to be stopped and contained, rather than as a natural process that needs to be facilitated.

12. Frontex and the agency eu-LISA operate a biometrics-based border control infrastructure. It consists of interoperable immigration and policing databases that undermine privacy and human rights, such as the right to ask for asylum.

13. Frontex plays an increasing role in stimulating and funding research for new border security and control technologies, including controversial 4) apps, in cooperation with universities and the private sector.

14. Frontex concluded multi-milion Euro contracts with Israeli arms company IAI for surveillance tights over the Mediterranean. It uses drones that have been marketed as “combat-proven” after being used against Palestinians.

15. Frontex, in coordination with the European Commission, can force EU member states to strengthen their border security capacities and practices.

16. Frontex has misused the war in Ukraine to expand its operational! area to Moldavia, where it targets migrants under the initial cover of helping refugees from Ukraine, and prepares for future operations in Ukraine.

17. Frontex has signed a cooperation agreement with the UK irrespective of its inhumane migration policies that saw the number of people drowning double in 2022.

18. Frontex failed to save the lives of more than 600 people who drowned during the Pylos shipwreck in June 2023. The shipwreck was overflown twice by Frontex “assets” before it capsized. This was not a tragedy, but a killing by design.

19. Frontex intentionally overlooks human rights violations committed by Bulgaria’s border guards, such as shooting at migrants, stealing their belongings, forcing them to strip and swim back to Turkey.

20. Frontex is a key player in the EU border regime that has killed more than 60,620 people since 1993.
