GrapheneOS opposes authoritarianism. It's a core part of why we're building privacy technology as part of a non-profit open source project. We're opposed to it regardless of whether it comes from left, center or right. The flood of people lying about what we believe and have said won't change this.
Our beliefs are not defined by what people who use GrapheneOS or donate to it believe. We decide what's acceptable within our community and we do a lot of moderation. We don't police what's done fully outside it. We clearly won't only have users, donors and supporters with beliefs aligned with ours.
We don't usually allow much political discussion in our community unless it's directly related to GrapheneOS. Today has been a very good demonstration of why that's the case. Many people are unable to tolerate even a minor disagreement on semantics without being absolutely enraged about it.
@GrapheneOS i'm sorry but if you go out of your way to let the very equivalent of people like trump sponsor you... that's not a good look
@stilic Can you explain how you think we're doing that? Should we be requiring interviews for donors about their political views before taking their money?
@GrapheneOS yes because that's like... a reasonable thing to do?
@stilic @GrapheneOS GOS doesn't listen to what it's donors request. A notable example of this iirc is their drama with FUTO whilst still accepting donations. GrapheneOS can receive funding from whoever and that doesn't mean that they're now influenced by them. This isn't like lobbying and GrapheneOS doesn't bend to its donors interest and from what I know is not entirely dependent on a major single donor to stay afloat so they have no incentive to do so.
@antsyboi @GrapheneOS ...then why can't they just drop the sponsorship? Money is more important than morals?
@stilic @antsyboi @GrapheneOS its more likely they need the money for funding but aren't desperate enough to bend the knee I'm assuming the policy at graphene OS is like its nice if u fund us but no strings attached type of situation
@stilic @GrapheneOS Its not compromising on their morals to accept donations with no strings attached. If they can get more money to funs the project without outside influence now dictating it, but why not take the money?
- It doesn't dictate the project
- It creates no outside influence
- The donation will support important privacy tool development
I don't get why they shouldn't take the money as a non-profit taking a no-strings-attached donation that will only serve to help GOS improve.
