Mel Brooks is turning 100 years old tomorrow. Everyone knows and loves his comedy. Not everyone knows he served as a US Army combat engineer in WWII and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

Happiest of birthdays to the GOAT of mocking Nazis. โค๏ธ

The Hilarious Way Mel Brooks Taunted the Nazis on the World War II Battlefield

Mel Brooks learned a thing or two about being a provocateur while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

@MaryAustinBooks

Ridicule is kryptonite for nazis. Good on ya, Mel.

@Uair

@MaryAustinBooks

That's the only way! Because you do not discuss with nazis!

@MaryAustinBooks "Mel Brooks is turning 100 years old tomorrow."...and he would still make better movies than the current crop of directors.

@aadeacon
Yeah, I was thinking about that. Normally when you have to contemplate the mortality of a beloved artist, you can at least console yourself: this is just how life is, and there will be more great artists.

That is indeed harder to do now.

@MaryAustinBooks With the prevalence of AI (spit), I wonder if the way forward for the performing arts is via amateur and semi pro theater
@aadeacon
Well, although the attack on the Kennedy Center is a disgrace, it's had exactly that effect on community theater in DC. People who no longer want to buy tickets to fashy Kennedy Center shows are now supporting small troupes. It sucks it had to happen this way, but rediscovering small theater operations does benefit everyone.
@aadeacon @MaryAustinBooks In the movie "Martin Short: Life Is Short," (Highly recommend) there is a hilarious scene of Mel Brooks being interviewed by Marty's Jiminy Glick character, and he got Mel laughing pretty hard.
@MHowell @aadeacon @MaryAustinBooks I stumbled upon the Martin Short movie. It is wonderful!

@MaryAustinBooks

This is true, so many people of his generation and slightly before.

Rob Sterling, Cary Grant, and Elvis are some of the actors I can think of that served in the US during World War II.

There were so many more that did as well

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @MaryAustinBooks
Jimmy Stewart was a bomber pilot and instead of using his fame to get sent on cushy milk runs, he actually flew serious combat missions. That's particularly notable because bomber crews had outrageous casualty rates - it was just about the most dangerous jobs you could do. Stewart flew over *20* goddamn missions.

And, on the flip side, John Wayne did everything he possibly could to avoid fighting in WWII because he was a fucking coward.

@jargoggles @MaryAustinBooks

Yeah, it makes me actually wonder how many missions my father flew because he was in the B-17โ€™s and the gunner at the bottom ball turret. He was also trained as a radio man.

When you consider the fatality rate of flight crews is remarkable than anyone survived

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @MaryAustinBooks
Something like 80-85% of them didn't.
@MaryAustinBooks
Mel Brooks never to be forgotten for bringing us Blazing Saddles

@MaryAustinBooks If you can find "Mel Brooks: The 99-year Old Man!" 2 part series directed by #JuddApatow I absolutely recommend it!๐Ÿ’ฏ

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33035435/

@MaryAustinBooks Legend. Second-born talked me into renting Spaceballs again night before last - didn't have to work too hard on that ๐Ÿ˜Š

Time to hit eBay and add a few more DVDs to the collection I think. Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein for starters, and any Get Smarts for definite.

@brad Hats off to you for giving the bird to Netflix!

@MaryAustinBooks Did that a while ago alright, and haven't looked back ๐Ÿ˜Š I've all of Red Dwarf now, The Simpsons, and the first 3 or 4 series of BSG (the reimagining, not the Dirk Benedict one sadly).

The kids enjoyed Iron Eagle as well, surprisingly much more so than Top Gun ๐Ÿ˜‚ They're still a bit young for the nihilism of Red Dawn though. One thing I will say is, the kids are alright. They've a grasp on irony and a kindness that makes this old bastard cry with pride.

@MaryAustinBooks Too bad said country is now lead by some self-seen narcist nazi king.
@MaryAustinBooks As a child I hid my little transistor radio under the covers and stayed awake past bedtime to listen to a faraway AM station broadcasting comedy records late at night. I was introduced to Mel Brooks by recordings of his "2000 Year Old Man".
I have loved Brooks and laughed with him all my life. He is a champion of freedom and the arts, a truly great American. โค๏ธ

"You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the landโ€”the common clay of the new West. You know... morons."

@MaryAustinBooks ooooh, I think I'll watch The Producers (original) tonight.

@MaryAustinBooks

The jewish humor formula should also work well on Trump and his yes menโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿฅณ

@xs4me2
That it does! There's a pin for it:
@MaryAustinBooks
"It's good to be king"
@MaryAustinBooks Heil himself! I learned his name watching B&W Get Smart reruns after school, one of the funniest ever.

@MaryAustinBooks

Springtime for Trumpers and MagaNazis?

@Sfwmson I would say that was last spring. Then the ole leopards got to work!

@MaryAustinBooks

One cannot nor should say 'everyone' unless you know everyone
So often I hear politician -wrong side- say everyone loves their idea while I hate it
I do like mel Brooks but do not want to be included when not asked for
