All it would take to get Universal Healthcare is convincing enough Americans that paying $2,000 in taxes is better than paying $8,000 in insurance.

That's it. It literally just boils down to convincing MAGA that the number 2 is smaller than the number 8.

@Lana

We must tell them it's 400% less !

@Lana Y'know you're talking about a people who wouldn't buy a 1/3 pounder burger because who would want something smaller than a 1/4 pounder?
@Lana I’m reminded of the failure of the A&W 1/3 pound burger, where a majority of their US focus group thought 1/3 was smaller than 1/4.
@Lana but... communism! and benefits for the Undeserving Poor! can't be done!!
@Lana bUt ThATs SoCiAlIsM
@Lana the problem is not that they don't know facts, it's that they are unmoved by them. you'd have to convince them instead that paying 2k in taxes hurts the people they hate more
@Lana
You're talking about a nation where a disappointingly large portion of the public thinks that 1/3 is bigger than 1/2...
@Lana But I know the Maga's in my world would say "that's math" and do not want to hear about it because they're just that stupid.
@Lana Easier said than done. Jock itch has a higher IQ than these folks.

@Lana

I'm not American but I believe there is a strong sense of "why should I pay for someone else's* healthcare".

And "it's my freedom not to pay for my own healthcare".

------

* They're ok to pay for Israel's healthcare, for some reason.

@rzeta0

Bro you're ALREADY paying for someone else's healthcare what the fuck do you think insurance even is

@Lana
AIUI, Americans are already paying the taxes to fund a universal healthcare system
@Lana I think one thing you can't rule out when it comes to human behaviour is its aspirational nature: people often vote based on where they see themselves in the future; and these visions need not be reasonable or realistic. Similarly, I would suggest, a tendency to feel invulnerable is at play in the healthcare debate. Not only that, but the idea that wealth and private care will bail them out in the unlikely event (in their minds) that they fall ill might seal the deal, as it were.
@jlj and yet every single other country in the world has managed to figure out that 2 < 8
@Lana They can't even figure out who was president in 2020.

@Lana Fun facts:

UK National Health Service costs £188.5 billion/yr
Around $248 billion USD/yr

Population of UK = 70m

So NHS costs $3500 USD per person.

Medicare costs $1.1 trillion/yr

US population = 348m

So Medicare costs $3160 USD per person.

But of course Medicare doesn't cover nearly as many people as the NHS.

The US citizen is already paying almost enough money for universal healthcare, even before insurance!

@TomF @Lana The UK system is not to be emulated though. But yeah...US fed is spending about 20% more than "government is the primary provider".
@mbr @TomF @Lana OTOH it makes a handful of people very wealthy, so who can say whether it's bad or not.

@dotstdy @TomF @Lana The GOP can't like it because the "private enterprise is always better" mantra

The DNC can't like it because the health care industry fills their coffers.

@Lana "It literally just boils down to convincing MAGA that the number 2 is smaller than the number 8."

So, it's hopeless then?

@Lana The US federal government spends ~20% more per person on health care than the top rated countries with government run primary providers. It's literally the fiscally conservative option. And it's conservative in the meaning of "proven track record" option.

@Lana

Good luck with that. Math is not a maga strength.

@Lana Whoa there. That's pretty ambitious with this crew.
@Lana it’s bonkers! Universal healthcare is the fiscally conservative option ahhhhhh
@Lana You're talking about the sorts of people who would rather cut off their nose to spite their face. It's okay that they can't afford healthcare so long as "the wrong sorts of people" can't afford healthcare even worse...
@Lana Silly person, you’re assuming that ordinary Americans have a say in the process. I’m afraid that the people getting the extra $6,000 already took care of that problem.
@Lana I wonder if part of the problem is they don't believe they will get Healthcare for that amount and they will end up paying 8k + 2k for what they get now. So they not only have to be convinced that 2k < 8k (which must be fairly easy) but that the 2k isn't just a con and they will end up paying the rest anyway (which is harder).
