Join Engaged Defenders For Democracy on Independence Day for a bridge brigade (demonstration) celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of our country. We will gather on the Broad Street Bridge over I-85 in Durham. This is a peaceful, non-partisan event. REGISTRATION Please visit the signup genius to register. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A054AAEA82EA5FE3-64243352-memorial#/ SIGNS AND FLAGS Please bring American flags, musical instruments, or other items suitable to a 4th celebration. No fireworks! We will provide highway facing banners. We encourage positive signs or posters with patriotic themes. While people on the highway will not be able to read them, drivers on the bridge will. Please keep in mind that it is unlawful to attach anything to the bridge or drape anything over the bridge. All flags and signs must be tethered to a person or heavy object. The bridge is very windy and we do not want to cause accidents. WHAT ELSE TO BRING Please also bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. PARKING There's plenty of free on-street parking very close by on Forest RD. Please park a few houses down to leave the closest spaces for people with mobility challenges. Additional parking is available around the side of the Burlington store at Northpoint Shopping Center. A long flight of steps connects the back of the parking lot to the sidewalk on Broad Street. ACCESSIBILITY The bridge and sidewalks on Broad Street are accessible. Sidewalks are 5 feet wide, and we keep our equipment within 2 feet of the railing to allow a 3 foot clear path. Please bring your own chair if you need one. The 1800 block of Forest Road is the best place to park. While it does not have sidewalks, it is not a through street and there is very little traffic. The top of the block is nearly flat. The 1700 block of Forest RD is very flat, but does not have sidewalks and is a little busier. If you have any more questions, please email [email protected] . CHILDREN Children are welcome, and the activities are suitable for them, though they may want to leave early. Please carefully consider the location though. A child can easily climb over or through the railings, but is very unlikely to just fall through by accident. There are a 5' sidewalk and a bike lane, but no physical barrier between pedestrians and traffic. You are the best judge of whether your child's temperament, personality, and maturity are a safe fit for the situation. Parent/guardians are responsible for supervising their children at all times. Also, please note that strollers more than 2 feet wide may need to be moved to accommodate someone with a wheelchair or walker. Items that could be tossed or dropped over the bridge should be secured. DIRECTIONS Use 1800 Forest RD, Durham NC to navigate. The Broad Street overpass is between exits 175 and 176 of I-85.
