ugh grumbling here tonight, while in fact I’m in a really good mood, why am I loading all that onto you all, apologies. I’ll think of some good things to toot

good thing 1: this excellent book I read last week.

A brilliant read. Do you live in #Melbourne? Read this, it’ll teach you loads about your own city (and if it doesn’t teach you it’ll at least be a feast of recognition)! #bookstodon #AusLit #Naarm

good thing 2: I’m still playing this op shop find of two weeks ago, again and again and again. What a beautiful record.

#NowPlaying Ella Fitzgerald - The Cole Porter Songbook
#vinyl #VinylRecords #jazz

good thing 3: free art is everywhere.

#graffiti #Melbourne #Naarm

good thing 4: it’s pretty here, isn’t it.

#Melbourne #Naarm #Yarra

good thing 5: winding down with a G&T from Aussie G and Tassie T, with a good book and some nice music

good thing 6 (of 6): June 27 is coming up.

I know none of you care - I’ve seen you all ignoring my toots about chopped & screwed 🧐

but that won’t stop me tooting about the delights of #Houston’s unique genre of slowed-down #hiphop, so have another one: DJ Screw’s Screwed Up Click [Red Pt 2] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p56blX-6IAg

good thing 6 bonus: perhaps Kendrick can make you all care about #June27.

Here he is, freestyling over the June 27 slowed down Kriss Kross/Jermaine Dupri instrumental: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oje_Z27kBXU&ra=m (so many brilliant moments, but note especially what happens when at 2:12 they prompt him with “lean”, the codeine syrup that inspired DJ Screw’s style, and caused his death).

@slevelt love both boathouses, so close to the CBD
@siftinsand Studley Park is lovely — the place that reminds us most of England in the whole of Naarm. We lived near its name-giver, Studley Royal, in North Yorkshire, before we moved here; the boathouse reminds us most of riverside pubs in Devon, though, where we lived previously.
@siftinsand (daughter made a decent argument in a geography paper recently for evidence of deliberate modelling of the Yarra bend at Studley Park after its Yorkshire namesake, which she knows well and loves)
@slevelt The row boats and buildings are definitely English style but I also love the Aussie gum trees and birds :)
@slevelt a short walk down the tracks. Loving the graffiti here.
@jdmcg @slevelt wonder if it had a ladder at some point in the past. 🤔
@slevelt Gosh, the name of the author is a bit of a eye catcher ;-)
@leonieke it is, isn’t it. delightful.
@slevelt ooooooo, something I often wondered about back when I lived there. I shall have to read
@slevelt thought about buying it today. Maybe I'll treat myself at the bookstore tomorrow.

@jdmcg I really recommend it, and I would advise it to be read as complementary to the Yoorrook final report (https://cdn.craft.cloud/06ad3276-b3d9-4912-bcbb-37795aade9a8/assets/documents/Yoorrook_OPR_Accessible_Print.pdf) - they’re definitely of the same moment, i.e., Victoria entering Treaty, though so different in focus that they have very little overlap.

(PS Not sure if you’ve already explored the libraries here, but my experience is they’ll order anything you request if they don’t already have it in the local system - though this one they may well already have in any case, as it’s doing the rounds here in Naarm, obviously.)

@slevelt joining the library was one of my first acts :-) i might ask them. Not only is my budget tight, my bookshelves are already under strain.
