It's been quite a while since I've gone on a proper metal journey.
It is the year of #ThrashMetal and today happens to be #ThrashThursday so...

Welcome to my Death Angel #Metaljourney 🤘

On Death Angel's debut album you can hear a lot of early Metallica, very early Slayer, some Megadeth and the vocals are partly very Anthraxy.

What's not to like?

Death Angel album number 2 is considered (another) thrash classic. It's "Frolic Through The Park" and has a very weird album cover.

And it has a speed metal song on it 👇

I gotta be honest, this album is way too long and I was getting bored.

But then this song came up and they pulled me back in again 👇

Ok so far I was pretty underwhelmed with "Frolic Through the Park". It took a Kiss cover to get my attention and now the follow up track is easily my favourite song on this journey 👇

Ok I have to admit: I am not a huge fan of early Death Angel. And another spin of "Frolic Through The Park" doesn't change that.

There are quite some "first three albums"-metalheads. But I can't believe that anyone would say this about Death Angel. The first two albums are ok, not more.

Album number 3 is called "Act III" and it starts like a John Bush era Anthrax album.

2 minutes in and I already like it much more than any of the first two.

Funny thing: when song 1 remembered me of John Bush, song 2 is so clearly Joey Belladonna.

Props to Mark Osegueda for pulling this off!

The only song on "Act III" I don't like is "Room With a View".
The rest is thrashtastic 🤘

Act III is at least 3 tiers above the first to and will have a very strong argument for being my #1 Death Angel album by the end of this journey.

After a fantastic 3rd album Death Angel split up.
They regroup again and come back in 2004 with "The Art of Dying".

It starts with an absolute banger 👇

Wait, that's an unusual voice... Oh, that's drummer Andy Galeon on vocals! Is that a first? I haven't noticed before.

Anyhow, I'd have prefered Mark Osegueda on the mic, because to be honest, Andy didn't really add anything and Mark is a fantastic.
The same is valid for the following track Land of the Blood.

A fantastic song closes a fantastic comeback album.

The album adds some serious groove while on the other hand speed metal elements are basically gone. All in all it's well balanced.

Next up: Relentless Retribution

It has to be said: Mark Osegueda's vocals aged like fine wine. On the first few albums he was more like a Belladonna/Hetfield/Mustaine tribute act. But ever since their comeback he really found his own style. And it rips, he's one of the best.

While listening to this album I got a call from school that my kid got sick because of the heat. Because there is no AC in the school. If you read this in the future: there is a massive heatwave going on while I am typing this.

I finished "Relentless Retribution" today and again, it is a banger of an album.

And here comes the album that ignited my love for Death Angel, The Evil Divide.
It was the first DA album I ever listened and it blew me away.
They just released a 10th anniversary addition which adds one song. Well, let's give this version a try.

Humanicide is another great album. Death Angel have a really strong catalogue, there aren't any stinkers.

I am not a huge fan of the first two albums though. Honestly I didn't find them very innovative. They borrowed A LOT from Anthrax and Megadeth and a bit less from Metallica and Slayer.

All of this is forgotten when it comes to Act III, which is superb and the most creative they have ever been.

So anyhow, here is my final Death Angel Metal Journey album ranking:

1. Act III
2. The Evil Divide
3. Killing Season
4. Humanicide
5. Relentless Retribution
6. The Art of Dying
7. The Ultra-Violence
8. Frolic Through the Park

@derthomas surprised to see Act III top the list.
@fistfulofdave me too actually. But it hit all my sweet spots.
@derthomas Sorry to hear about Little Thomas, buddy. I hope he's OK. The heat is overwhelming when you're not used to it. When I was his age, I didn't do well with it either (still don't)...
@wendigo Austria is just not prepared for this, because there was no need for ACs. Yes, summers were hot in the past too, but not like this, not even remotely. And it's getting more extreme by the year.
Especially schools must be equipped with air conditioning, everything else is ridiculous.
@derthomas Oh man! I'm sorry to hear that. In these conditions without AC the kids should be allowed to have no school days. That's how Spain seems to manage, the kids get a very long summer, but there's then the issue of what to do to keep your kids entertained for months...

@Kitty the whole thing is just ridiculous. The grading period ended two weeks ago, and there are effectively no more regular classes. They just do small excursions or paint or whatever. Now there are discussions to start summer holidays 2 weeks earlier from next year onwards.
My solution would be a different one: all schools must be equipped with ACs powered by photovoltaic systems.

In Austria we have 9 weeks of summer holidays to cover. It's not always easy for parents to manage that. We don't get 9 weeks unfortunately...

@derthomas Yeah. We've the fight of AC in schools as some have it, some don't.

And we've a long summer with the kids going to family members, camps, classes. It's complicated and expensive for parents.

It creates a new culture, but it takes time to build it. A new market, and the experience of usually young adults and late teens being involved in summer activities for kids for a summer job.

@derthomas @Kitty 9 weeks … !??? WTF 😳
@trendskater @Kitty yes, everything less would not be appropriate.
Hungary has 10-11!

@derthomas @trendskater @Kitty Uh, oh, It's 3 months here.

15 June to 15 September pre-uni, July, August, September for uni.

@trendskater @derthomas @Kitty the US it’s almost 12 weeks. Lots of summer camps, day care, friends houses, etc. it’s been easy since he’s been 11, I’ve worked at home and he has been able to entertain himself. He’s 17 now and has a car so no burden on me at all.
@fistfulofdave @trendskater @derthomas @Kitty As a teacher and parent I’m totally happy with the 6 weeks summer break. It’s long enough - for kids AND parents. In principle, we have between 6 and 8 weeks of school, followed by a two or one week of vacation throughout the year.
@derthomas Yep, and with Kerry King he’s top notch 💪🏻

@derthomas @trendskater Kerry struck gold getting him.

Not only is he outstanding as a vocalist, but he is such a great performer live.

@kreatorfangirls @derthomas Haha, I thought you would underline that … You were also raving about the album👌🏻😄

@trendskater @derthomas Hehe, yes, surely one of my faves this decade.

And it was such a treat to see the band live too!

@derthomas Actually, I was only familiar with Act III for many many years — I have that album on vinyl. Then, a few years ago, I saw Death Angel live alongside Testament and Exodus and realized I’d missed a lot. They’re a great band, and I’ve really enjoyed listening to them ever since that concert. Anyway, there is still a lot to catch up for me, so maybe I should just follow your ranking and pick a few albums for the next days 🙂
@derthomas such an awesome album!
@derthomas "Act III" is such a wildly versatile and creative album, especially for how young they were. The drummer wasn't even 20.

@derthomas Things will get much better on "Act III".

But actually there's a lot of people out there who say that their first album is their best and they've never reached that level again. Not me though.

@derthomas I love the first three but again I bought them as they came out. I find the reunion stuff to be generic where they were unique in the beginning. I don’t think they ever come close to “Mistress of Pain” or “Kill as One” again.

Are you going to cover the two Organization albums they did? Not great.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Organization_(band)

The Organization (band) - Wikipedia

@fistfulofdave I envy you for having lived through that time in the 80s! And yes, that changes the perspective.

No, I don't plan on listening to the Organization albums. Maybe later, but it doesn't seem like you'd recommend them.

@derthomas they’re a curiosity at best. I want to like them…
@derthomas It's a Kiss cover.
@faltenbalg I guess I just exposed myself as not knowing much Kiss.
@derthomas I don't know much either, never been my cup of tea.
