It's been quite a while since I've gone on a proper metal journey.
It is the year of #ThrashMetal and today happens to be #ThrashThursday so...

Welcome to my Death Angel #Metaljourney 🤘

On Death Angel's debut album you can hear a lot of early Metallica, very early Slayer, some Megadeth and the vocals are partly very Anthraxy.

What's not to like?

Death Angel album number 2 is considered (another) thrash classic. It's "Frolic Through The Park" and has a very weird album cover.

And it has a speed metal song on it 👇

I gotta be honest, this album is way too long and I was getting bored.

But then this song came up and they pulled me back in again 👇

Ok so far I was pretty underwhelmed with "Frolic Through the Park". It took a Kiss cover to get my attention and now the follow up track is easily my favourite song on this journey 👇

Ok I have to admit: I am not a huge fan of early Death Angel. And another spin of "Frolic Through The Park" doesn't change that.

There are quite some "first three albums"-metalheads. But I can't believe that anyone would say this about Death Angel. The first two albums are ok, not more.

Album number 3 is called "Act III" and it starts like a John Bush era Anthrax album.

2 minutes in and I already like it much more than any of the first two.

Funny thing: when song 1 remembered me of John Bush, song 2 is so clearly Joey Belladonna.

Props to Mark Osegueda for pulling this off!

...and just like that, there's a funk-metal song. This album is something else!

The only song on "Act III" I don't like is "Room With a View".
The rest is thrashtastic 🤘

Act III is at least 3 tiers above the first to and will have a very strong argument for being my #1 Death Angel album by the end of this journey.

@derthomas such an awesome album!
@derthomas "Act III" is such a wildly versatile and creative album, especially for how young they were. The drummer wasn't even 20.

@derthomas Things will get much better on "Act III".

But actually there's a lot of people out there who say that their first album is their best and they've never reached that level again. Not me though.

@derthomas I love the first three but again I bought them as they came out. I find the reunion stuff to be generic where they were unique in the beginning. I don’t think they ever come close to “Mistress of Pain” or “Kill as One” again.

Are you going to cover the two Organization albums they did? Not great.

@fistfulofdave I envy you for having lived through that time in the 80s! And yes, that changes the perspective.

No, I don't plan on listening to the Organization albums. Maybe later, but it doesn't seem like you'd recommend them.

@derthomas they’re a curiosity at best. I want to like them…
@derthomas It's a Kiss cover.
@faltenbalg I guess I just exposed myself as not knowing much Kiss.
@derthomas I don't know much either, never been my cup of tea.
@derthomas
I think it's a great album, but a little straighten up the songwriting would helped too.
But then again, these Guys were 16ish around that time so i think that's ok

@NoRestfortheWicked @derthomas

I like Death Angel a lot but I've always struggled with the first two albums, the debut in particular. Something about that energy there. And the high pitched screams, not helpful at all to my ears. He discards them after the second album.
