Last night something chewed off the tops of all but one of the scarlet runner beans that germinated two days ago. ☹️

But didn't touch the bush bean seedlings in grow bags less than 15 feet away.

@redcrew

oh so sad!

I'm sure the flavor is quite different.

@MCDuncanLab Frustrating. I have never eaten scarlet runner beans. This is my first year growing them. I've only grown bush beans in the past.

@redcrew Oh no! That's so frustrating.

Last night something tried to dig up one of my salvias and the nasturtiums I had planted around it… and didn't touch anything else in my yard. Baffling.

@jwisser Oh no! What animals visit your garden? We get raccoons, possums, ground hogs, and rabbits. Last year I put up fences and put out containers of Epsom salts.

@redcrew I've seen all four of those in the neighborhood, plus gray and fox squirrels. (We also get deer wandering the nearby yards, but my little fenced patio with raised beds isn't interesting to them.)

I'm not sure who the culprit was last night, but I've chased both raccoons and a groundhog out of my space before. I'd also believe it was one of the squirrels; there are several young ones around at the moment.

@redcrew my bet is groundhogs but maybe that’s the groundhog trauma talking

@amcvittie Argh, are groundhogs in your garden this year?

I think mine may be a squirrel?

Based on what I saw this morning, when I casually looked outside and saw a squirrel chew off the top 5 inches of a Sunspot sunflower plant about 10 feet away.

I chased the squirrel away.

@redcrew there had been several. The dogs have gotten 5 of them so far. A situation I don’t enjoy for anyone’s safety. I started putting metal dig blockers along the fence line to try and stop them from coming in the yard.
@amcvittie Whoa. Have the blockers worked?
@redcrew kind of? I assume unless the do the whole fence line they’ll dig new holes
