So, this seems to be the main change in Google's terms of service, which I've just gotten a notice about:

"Cellular, Wi-Fi, and other Network Connection Costs

"Google services may frequently use the Internet when you're not actively engaged with the services or your device. Google uses the Internet in this way for a wide variety of purposes — for example, to provide software updates and to improve Google's services, security, user experience, and/or Google’s operations, including advertising. These uses rely on your cellular, Wi-Fi, and/or other network connections and may count against your data allowance with your cellular or internet service providers. You're responsible for all of these network usages and associated costs. You may wish to check your cellular or internet service plan, and your device and network settings."

Does this mean that it's going to start using up my data? That seems undesireable. Also puzzling. I suppose I'd better check my plans. (ps, what am I looking for in my plans? this seems so weird).

Meanwhile it has also called my attention to their (apparently not new) claim to the right to do whatever they want with everything I've written that they've access to. Also undesireable.

@anarchademic @rayckeith a follower sent me this, which points out one way google is using my bandwidth to send data to their servers. Eek.

@deborahh

Thank you, Deborah, but, um, "The page you are looking for isn't here."

@gnomon

Can you share how google is using my bandwidth to send data to their servers?
(thx)

@anarchademic oops, maybe it was a DM from @gnomon .

He was pointing out some Android settings I was not aware of.

@deborahh @gnomon

Hmm. Thanks. This seems to be about how they're using the data they get from surveilling you, but I don't see how this is them using the internet via your bandwidth while you're not using their services.

@anarchademic @gnomon well, they have to transmit surveillance data somehow! And any data they transmit that's not in line with the purpose for which I use the app (ex: the SMS app, where my intention is to communicate with my friend, not with google)
