#Primaries news

#Mamdani backed three challengers in #NYC against incumbent #Democrats

#BradLander, #DarializaAvilaChevalier, #ClaireValdez

How many won?

All three of them did

Two of them over multiple term centrist milquetoast Democrats (the third retired)

How did that happen?

Well you see some people whine nothing ever changes, some people sit on their hands until perfect magically appears, and some get off their fucking asses and #vote in the fucking primaries

@benroyce It's worth noting that NYC is effectively a one-party jurisdiction and the Dem primary is the whole ballgame.

Many (if not most) US congressional districts are safe Dem or safe GOP, which means the party primary is the contest that really matters. If you don't tune in til later, you've missed your chance to make an impact.

@liferstate @benroyce it's also important to note that if you're an independent you cannot vote in primaries in states like NY which have closed primaries. That's giving up a lot of power. Be wary of folks urging you to be an independent.
@jonesmurphy @liferstate @benroyce - That's fkd up. You can't vote in the primaries for choosing to be an independent voter. I call this Fascism.
@atlovato @liferstate @benroyce you clearly don't know what Fascism is. Fascism is what the GOP is doing right now, disenfranchising black voters. It's what America was doing long before Hitler was born. It's what so many Americans call #MAGA. If you're independent, be independent. Vote in general elections. Party primaries are not your property if you're not a member of that party. They should not be open to people who are not loyal members.

@atlovato @jonesmurphy @liferstate

every state is different

https://www.ncsl.org/elections-and-campaigns/state-primary-election-types

you got closed, partially closed, open to unaffiliated voters, partially open, open/ multi-party, etc

State Primary Election Types

The manner in which party primary elections are conducted varies widely from state to state. Primaries can be categorized as either closed, partially closed, partially open, open to unaffiliated voters, open or top-two.

@benroyce @atlovato @liferstate it's a similar situation with the voter suppression. There is no Federal national right to vote in the USA, unlike in civilized countries. The obstacle is racism.

@jonesmurphy @atlovato @liferstate

it's always been there but under trump the racists took a bold step forward with their malice in Louisiana v Callais just 2 months ago. it's going to get worse (or, rather than "worse," the racists will be more open about their bigotry)

@benroyce @atlovato @liferstate forward, meaning backward to the good old days they call #MAGA .

@jonesmurphy @atlovato @liferstate

forward and all about out of the filth like cockroaches when you turn the light on

@liferstate @benroyce
Re
"...most) US congressional districts ( #NYC ) are safe Dem

Well, we need to keep kicking the fire, unmotivated voters, they can stay home

It happened in Nov 2025. Nationally, 10 million registered voters did not vote, that was a problem, for all of us, we got Trump, again

I heard there are 800k Republicans in NYC.

@liferstate

My state votes so late in the presidential primary that I feel I have no impact on that race. The nominee is usually locked in before Maryland votes. And Maryland is so reliably Democratic, that neither Republicans nor Democrats make more than a fundraising stop here.

It's the down-ballot stuff that gets me out to the poll in Maryland.
