Great message from Calgary’s mayor:

For background: the Calgary Stampede brings millions into Calgary for 10 days of hootin’ hollerin’ and fun. At the periphery of the site are huge party tents run by businesses that host concerts and operate late into the night at ear-shattering decibels.

Calgary city council amended by-law exemptions in February to curtail the most ridiculous excesses. So - of course - Alberta’s Premier and a few Ministers heard complaints from their wealthy donors and rich friends that run these operations, and wrote a letter to city council ordering them to backtrack, and they threatening to rescind the bylaws directly with new power the province recently gave itself. City council just reconfirmed their commitment to stay the course on behalf of residents.
@DavidM_yeg Good. If the province wants noise, make 'em own it.

Exactly. I wish our municipal governments were already doing more of this… the GoAB has been bullying Calgary and Edmonton this way at least since 2020 and for the most part the cities cave with the excuse that since it will happen anyway its better under our own terms.
I take the opposite tack: make the province play its hand, make it use up social capital, make the bullying clear.
Complying in advance only encourages them.

Property rights include being able to get sleep before work. Calgary should be asking why drunk fake cowboys get to quash property rights of hardworking Calgarians, so they can be drunk longer.
