What is education for, how do we measure it, how SHOULD we measure it, and how can we fix it?

At the moment we’re mostly measuring atar and student retention as the most important outcomes of the system. How many kids make it to year 12 and what do they score? We should be measuring: covid deniers, flat earthers, anti vaxxers, sovereign citizens, people with blind faith in technology.

@lindamciver very much an outsider here. As someone with two BS and an MS, it saddens me deeply that school is relegated to vocational training. The naive part of me thinks it should be learning how to learn both in breadth and depth in topics that are both interesting and aren't. It should be about expanding your world view, considering different perspectives and different perceptions, and about exploring yourself and the world in a safe space.

@lindamciver I hardly remember any of my calculus or physics, but I remember the professor who taught me about theater and the different styles and how the audience is part of the show. Watching live theater has enriched my life as a result. I took classes in rock climbing, fencing, ballet, and weight lifting. Rock climbing stuck with me for a long time and ballet helped me appreciate dance. It's more than how to make more money.

Sounds like you're starting from an even harder place.
