Midsummer day, where another of our cast of characters will wake up to find that Puck has transformed them into our Prime Minister for the next year.

"Up and down, up and down,
I will lead them up and down.
[...]
Lord, what fools these mortals be!"

A Happy Solstice to you all.

@JackTLadd Wonderful stuff, thank you for sharing
@davidallengreen I find myself repeating "Lord, what fools these mortals be" to myself quite a lot these days. Except it's not "fools". First letter c. Sounds like punts.
@davidallengreen The bookies have their favourite, and I would not bet against their pick, but the ring will not be devoid of hats. All to the good. Coronations are for monarchies, not political parties.

@mrgeoffshumba

The Truss-Sunak leadership contest was not edifying or helpful. Be careful what you wish for.

@davidallengreen A good point, Davis, but Liis Truss had legitimacy. Sunak did not. At least we found out the the majority of Conservative Party members were economically illiterate dupes of Tufton Street unicorn farmers. (Along with Farage, The Mail, Express, Telegraph and half of the Cabinet.)

@mrgeoffshumba

Support from a bunch of unrepresentative activists confers no meaningful legitimacy. They don't represent me, and so they cannot legitimise something on my behalf.

If there needs to be a vote, party leaders should be drawn from votes of MPs, not party members.

@davidallengreen I agree David. I would trust PLP members over party members every time. An appointment without a contest is not accepted by the public as worthy.
@mrgeoffshumba I am as much a member of "the public" as you, and that statement is not true for me. You are projecting your own views on to the "public".
@davidallengreen @mrgeoffshumba
I’m with dag. Party membership has proven itself very unreliable for picking PMs. You can argue that that is because of big money and vested interests capturing the narrative, but we are where we are and for now we have to accept that.
@davidallengreen Not my view, David. I listened to LBC when this question was discussed, and a substantial majority of callers were of that opinion. Not a scientific sample, obviously, but noteworthy to me.
@mrgeoffshumba Still not 'the public' though, really.
@davidallengreen I should have said 'some people' really. More of a journalist than a lawyer. :-)
@mrgeoffshumba Journalism should be as precise as law!
@davidallengreen Should be, David, but rarely is. šŸ˜‰
