The posts today about Juneteenth and marronage remind me of Bugs Bunny frequently saying “ya big maroon” as an insult. Did the writers know what they were doing, was it on purpose? I remember kids calling each other “maroon”, either assuming it was a cute way to say “moron”, or not thinking about it at all.

It was definitely a moron euphemism. They had lots more, going further back. Humor more intended for adults originally.
