The whole world used Python – one language. And as centralized data became the norm, they found level ground in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.

And they said to one another “Come, let us assemble building materials and architects’ plans.”

Then they said “Come, let us build a city and a massive data center in a skyscraper, which will make the Burj Khalifa look like a toy; and let us come up with a fantastic brand, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

And the LORD came down to see the city and the data center, and He said, “Look, these people share a uniform technology, and all program in the same language; and they have started doing this, and they will be able to do anything they imagine.”

And the LORD said “Come, let us go down there and make Python 2 and Python 3 incompatible with each other.”

So the LORD scattered them from that place all over the world; and they stopped building the city and abandoned the enormous data center.

And that is how the LORD saved the human race from excessive centralization and groupthink; and therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the unitary programming language.

And from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

@ossobuffo You forget that chapter 1 has a completely different origin story, this one written in Perl.
@royal @ossobuffo Perl! No, the pre-fall language was Lisp. 😝

I've never coded a line of lisp in my life, but even I know that Lisp ain't going nowhere, ever. 😁

We'll have Lisp programmers when our sun supernovas ;)

@rl_dane @wulfhart @ossobuffo The word @wulfhart is looking for us prelapsarian.

Lisp reminds me of the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic insistence on celestial perfection. Everything's in perfect circles (matched parens) and if it isn't perfect yet, just add more.

Lisp is beautiful

Dude, you're gonna make me learn #Lisp after #Ed and #vi, aren't you?

Maybe now I'll actually be able to grow a beard. But probably only on my neck. 🤣

@rl_dane
Lilypond, the engraving software I use, is written in a mix of C++ and GUILE, which is the GNU flavor of Scheme. I’ve written three or four extremely simple macros, so I guess I must be a Lisp-er.

Not only that, but "let's continualy change Python3 so that programs written in Python3 won't run anymore unless you update them every couple of years."

Wait a minute...

(pulls God mask away from person's face)

SATAN, was that you all along?!?

"Hi, actually, my name is Larry Ellison."
