Reasons we fly a pride flag:

Leaving the house this morning, there was a kid, maybe grade 5, no rain gear, sitting on our front step.

I was obviously a little startled

Me: uhm...hi? Can I help you?

Kid: oh! No, I'm just taking a break my mom told me that if I ever need to ask an adult for help I should look for a house with a rainbow flag because that means it's safe. I don't need help, just a dry spot for calling my friend to bring my rain coat.

And then his friend rocked up with his coat and off they went.
@technicolourpenguin Shout out to the mom. Parenting done right.
@technicolourpenguin @DevlinLeathercraft This is a great story. Meanwhile, I'm sure some conservative has taught their children exactly the opposite. Sad for them.

@mlanger @technicolourpenguin @DevlinLeathercraft if by opposite you mean, "nowhere is safe and everyone is it to get you" yes.

Yea pride flags get a special call out, but yards full of american flags or religious paraphanalia aren't a signifiers of being supportive of community in the same way.

@kevingranade @mlanger @technicolourpenguin I come from a military family but took down my US flag shortly after this administration took power. Not only are their policies offensive and not representative of the freedoms my family has fought for but they also consider their soldiers expendable and are quietly reducing their benefits: health, education and otherwise.

@kevingranade @technicolourpenguin @DevlinLeathercraft No, by the opposite message I think a lot of conservatives are telling their kids that rainbow flags, etc. are at the homes of bad people. I don't really want to get into more detail here because what they teach their kids is so repulsive to me.

To me, pride flags and Black Lives Matter flags and things like that mark the homes of smart, progressive, thinking people who are interested in helping others.

@technicolourpenguin In a similar way my son (22) said that if he ever had kids, he would teach them to trust long-haired men in particular. Because those would likely be metalheads, and thus the kindest and most trustworthy people. I think that logic is a bit flawed, but the observation has some merit.

@hopfgeist @technicolourpenguin in a not entirely dissimilar vein when I've found myself in an unknown area and in need of some form of refuge I've been known to seek out craft beer rooms.

Pubs and bars can be unsafe, cafés weirdly judgemental, but craft beer nerds? My limited sampling has had a 100% success rate for them being quirky people willing to offer a seat or a charger to a quirky person, even one like me who doesn't drink and doesn't have a clue what they are talking about.

@hopfgeist @technicolourpenguin

Once when I was about 15, I was walking in the rain about 2 miles. A businessman stopped and offered a ride, I turned him down. A hippie in a van stopped, and I accepted. (Both men were white.)

My mom read me the riot act about accepting the ride at all. I don't remember if I told her about declining the first ride.

@nosrednayduj @hopfgeist @technicolourpenguin Not the largest, but certainly one of the reasons I almost always have vivid purple hair in what can only be described as a clown haircut, is that other than that I 100% look like the kind of white dude parents teach kids to avoid.
@technicolourpenguin @zhenech It's so powerfully rainy over there that my eyes just got a little wet too…
@technicolourpenguin i need to buy and hang a prideflag on my balcony!
@technicolourpenguin That is amazingly sweet! Proud of that kid's mom especially.
@technicolourpenguin honestly, hard agree. Best chance for a safe home or adult

@technicolourpenguin

I love this. I've never been much of one for flags as there isn't much space in a downtown home but I will have to make space now.

Never thought about this. Thank you.

@technicolourpenguin that's awesome. thank you for sharing
@technicolourpenguin
This is beautiful. I want to live in this kind of world.
@technicolourpenguin, I've heard of grading of eggs, but… grading of children?
@technicolourpenguin 100% Pride flags are a good way to find the cool people, but also to signal to others you're safe to be yourself around. It's why this one always tries has some kind of pride thing somewhere on its person. Has had lots of nice interactions because of it.
@technicolourpenguin @chu wow, this makes me wish, even more, that I had a porch to fly a pride flag on. ❤
@deborahh Think outside of the box, a window or balcony is often just fine to show one ;)
@dreua I've done that, on the 2nd floor. But this story of being a welcoming porch for the neigbourhood particularly attracts me.
@technicolourpenguin maybe I should take the leap from just my RGB lights in the evening and test the waters with a flag. Seems like there's a damned good return on that.
