Well, at least they‘re honest: Screw the planet, screw your children‘s future, our loss-making, billions-burning business model is more important. Quick! More gas! Like a con man creating time pressure. Meanwhile the heat is escalating like never before.

Europe must choose between AI and climate goals, data center lobby says

Tech sector says only carbon-emitting gas plants are reliable enough today to power the EU’s AI goals.

POLITICO
@chrisstoecker “If AI falls behind, it means that we will have to buy it forever rather than build it now.” … How does this non sequitur even make any sense?

@HeptaSean

What I dislike is the idea of AI being something like a physical law. It is not. It’s a result of choices made.

@chrisstoecker

@Saupreiss @chrisstoecker Of course, it is not. But this statement is broken on even more levels.

Even if you want to do “AI” in general, the future might still be in small, local models trained on smaller training sets of curated high quality (and hopefully more ethically sourced) training data. Then there surely is no “forever“ dependency.

And even if you want to do the currently hyped behemoths (despite their climate, societal, and monetary costs), the time pressure seems hallucinated. Up to now, “AI” seems to be a field where it is quite easy to enter the competition at a later stage. Several of them have done that. Then there also is no “forever” dependency.

@HeptaSean

I seem to Sound like an AI hater anyway. I am not. I have successfully used and implemented what was later called „AI“ well over ten years back.

What I oppose against are LLMs… 😉

@chrisstoecker

@Saupreiss What makes you think that you sound like an AI hater?
@HeptaSean Things That come out of my mouth. 😁
@Saupreiss For the faithful the slightest concern is heresy. You should not care. @HeptaSean

@HeptaSean @chrisstoecker

Do you wanna take a guess how the document was produced?

@chrisstoecker Wieso wird ein Widerspruch zwischen Klimazielen und AI kreiert? AI braucht doch billige Energie, und die gibt es nur mit den Erneuerbaren.

@roshudo

1.) Erneuerbare bedürfen Steuerung. Das wäre kein Problem. Bei der durch den Boom ausgelösten Krise der Hardwarepreise wird aber 24/7-Betrieb möglichst auf Volllast benötigt.
2.) Es gibt nicht genug EE dafür. Es gibt auch nicht genügend Fossile dafür. Und auch nicht genug Atomkraft.
3.) Die Energie wird für Sinnvolleres benötigt.

‘A full-on embrace’: how the EU’s largest news publisher fell in love with the US

The letter singled out two recent op-eds by parent company CEO Matthias Dopfner.

@chrisstoecker yeah, I don't think we should quote them.

do what you want. but it's weird that you inform people "Don't mainstream NIUS" (so good! thanks for that!) and then screenshot Politico to encourage shares of that Politico screenshot.

“ Grotesk einfache Entscheidung”

There is a beautiful clarity to the German language and I really should dust off a few bits I remember and pick it up again.

@chrisstoecker Politico Europe is, after all, one of the propaganda arms of the US interests in Europe. They are basically RT, only with US instead of R.
@chrisstoecker

We are #Europe, hence we should be helpful driving the decision making process.

@chrisstoecker

@Saupreiss @kobold @chrisstoecker

Well, given the wording of the poll @Saupreiss is right:

Due to its resource requirements, AI causes increased climate change. So...

@chrisstoecker they're right : we need to chose between AI and climate goals. Let's cancel all data center projects !

@chrisstoecker

I am wondering what would happen if the token-prize was bound to/dependent on the day-ahead market for electricity.

I know, with current hardware shortage, they would prefer it to run 24/7. But with flexible cost, one should shift the workload to times with abundant clean energy.

@jonasgraphie @chrisstoecker It's a very good idea. Most of the AI workloads - at least the ones that matter, like sequencing proteins to find new cures - can easily be scheduled at the cheap solar power time.

@tsyum Weird. There was Alt-Text in both screenshots, Fedica seems to have eaten the first. Fixed it.
@chrisstoecker pertinent remark. We choose climate goals, thank you very much.

@chrisstoecker

Choose between AI and climate goals?

The choice is the same as we can have billionaires or decision-making power in our lives.

I know I know that that’s a really tough choice

@chrisstoecker we won't need a climate if we can build a self-modifying artificial superintelligence to destroy us.
@chrisstoecker On the one hand, it would be nice for people to be able to continue living for at least another few decades, but on the other hand, I really like being told made up bullshit with utter confidence, eliminating the usefulness of recording devices, writing horrendous code with little effort, and letting my critical thinking and problem solving skills atrophy, so I guess we'll just have to flip a coin.

@chrisstoecker I just love how embarrassing and straightforward this ultimatum is, how they've presented the world's easiest and least personally favorable choice to a continent that already largely sees through the grift. It's got that _For Baskins_ energy.
