Heads up⊠ya know all those licence plate cameras popping up everywhere?
Now theyâre gonna pick up your IMEI, and other radio data to track you.
DESTROY THEM ALL.

I will absolutely go back to using an ipod, and turning my phone off when not actively using it.
I donât do wearables (theyâre all nagwear, or quantifying bullshit that doesnât need to be quantified unless youâre one of the few who have real health issues), and my car pre-dates talking to the mothership all the time.
I hate this world.
"That guy doesn't have a cellphone, pull him over."
@octothorpe How much to fit my car with a Faraday cage?
All this license plate tracking is enough to make me ride a bike.
@troublewithwords Iâm super upset about this. A bunch popped up in Greenwich several months ago without proper hearings. They shut them down. But literally earlier this week, theyâre spinning them back up again WITHOUT having those hearings.
This smells of corruption.
Then it will probably pickup everybody with a phone no matter how they are travelling...
Whats the point anymore....
@meltedcheese but thatâs just it, isnât it? Scale, and access. Not too long ago, the average LEO didnât have the means to collect, store, and/or look up any random IMEI, or other cross-referenced table-joined electronic signature. Now rando third parties do it for funzies, and literally anyone can do it if they pay the monthly fee.
Fuck that.
@octothorpe Comrades sometimes get frustrated that I never have any mobile data at the big protest events, especially in London. There's a strategic reason for this: thwarting a common surveillance tech known to be in heavy use in the capitol. IMSI catchers are everywhere and used to mass monitor entire crowds.
I'd sooner not get caught up in that dragnet - especially when engaged in dissent against the policies of the government!
Car-free life sounds like a future option.
@adavid notionally, sure. But not practical for me. But yeah. I wanted my next car to be an EVâŠ
But maybe I can retrofit EV motors into my existing RS5 đ€Ł
I know. The ideal is there, but I did not realise that the part of the region we moved to had poor public transport options. As a result, we became a two car couple for the first time in our lives. We have replaced both ICE vehicles with EVs.
This is exactly what I envisioned when I decided to turn off my phone completely when I drive, and why I also disabled the OnStar Antenna in my Bolt.
