Heads up
 ya know all those licence plate cameras popping up everywhere?

Now they’re gonna pick up your IMEI, and other radio data to track you.

DESTROY THEM ALL.

License Plate Cameras Will Soon Track Phones, Wearables, Infotainment, and Even Your Pets

A new kind of license-plate-reading camera will also scrape the smart devices you take with you, and wrap all that data in a nice little bow for law enforcement and the government.

The Drive

I will absolutely go back to using an ipod, and turning my phone off when not actively using it.

I don’t do wearables (they’re all nagwear, or quantifying bullshit that doesn’t need to be quantified unless you’re one of the few who have real health issues), and my car pre-dates talking to the mothership all the time.

I hate this world.

@octothorpe

"That guy doesn't have a cellphone, pull him over."

@octothorpe
I was going to say something similar. My MP3 player has an old fashioned cord that plugs in to the car radio, and I don't use Bluetooth or hands-free anywhere. I can't turn my phone off completely because I'm running a small business, but at least I have a VPN.

@octothorpe How much to fit my car with a Faraday cage?

All this license plate tracking is enough to make me ride a bike.

@troublewithwords I’m super upset about this. A bunch popped up in Greenwich several months ago without proper hearings. They shut them down. But literally earlier this week, they’re spinning them back up again WITHOUT having those hearings.

This smells of corruption.

@octothorpe It does. Be a shame if they caught fire. (Either the corrupt officials or the cameras.)

@octothorpe @troublewithwords

Then it will probably pickup everybody with a phone no matter how they are travelling...

Whats the point anymore....

@octothorpe All our radio data is already being collected. Has been for years. Tracking someone isn’t a matter of starting to collect data, it’s a matter of looking it up. People are very predictable. Technically, it would not be legal for LE to collect your voice calls without a warrant, but if you are someone “of interest” (think national security) then you will attract the eye of Sauron.

@meltedcheese but that’s just it, isn’t it? Scale, and access. Not too long ago, the average LEO didn’t have the means to collect, store, and/or look up any random IMEI, or other cross-referenced table-joined electronic signature. Now rando third parties do it for funzies, and literally anyone can do it if they pay the monthly fee.

Fuck that.

@octothorpe Comrades sometimes get frustrated that I never have any mobile data at the big protest events, especially in London. There's a strategic reason for this: thwarting a common surveillance tech known to be in heavy use in the capitol. IMSI catchers are everywhere and used to mass monitor entire crowds.

I'd sooner not get caught up in that dragnet - especially when engaged in dissent against the policies of the government!

@octothorpe The gang members are just gonna put their phones on airplane mode lol
@idahoan26 I *think* iphone airplane mode is leaky now (for a few major OS updates. I forget when it changed).
@octothorpe I'm sure there's ways around that. It can't be too hard to get a phone to actually shut off its radios. IDK about android but maybe with custom roms? I guess my point is that there's mitigations, we just gotta be clever about it.
@idahoan26 @octothorpe
"Clever" is attacking every one of these fucking abominations with an angle grinder.

@octothorpe

Car-free life sounds like a future option.

@adavid notionally, sure. But not practical for me. But yeah. I wanted my next car to be an EV

But maybe I can retrofit EV motors into my existing RS5 đŸ€Ł

@octothorpe

I know. The ideal is there, but I did not realise that the part of the region we moved to had poor public transport options. As a result, we became a two car couple for the first time in our lives. We have replaced both ICE vehicles with EVs.

@octothorpe Shit like this goes both ways. I wouldn't mess with the techies out there, just sayin'

@octothorpe

This is exactly what I envisioned when I decided to turn off my phone completely when I drive, and why I also disabled the OnStar Antenna in my Bolt.

@octothorpe @josh guess I’ll start using my RF shielded bags more often
@octothorpe I have to reach Level 86 and unlock the “Faraday wrapper” for my car.
