@vermaden

It's 2026, and we still don't know what the ELI in GELI stands for ๐Ÿ˜‚

I've emailed the author. He was very cordial, but kept his cards close to his chest. ๐Ÿ˜„

Of course we donโ€™t, itโ€™s encrypted.

We all know what 'G' stands for and the rest 'ELI' part is mostly refereed to as Encryption Layer Interface - but Yes - Pawel is very funny in this aspect :)

What does "GELI" stand for (not what does it do)?

So I'm busily working at figuring out the best geli implementation on my system, piles of notes, some early benchmarks. It's silly, but it's been irritating me that I don't know what g-e-l-i means. I know that "g" is GEOM (so I've ruled out "Georgia Early Learning Initiative"), but what about...

Yeah, I asked him if it was "Encryption Layer Interface," and he said no. ๐Ÿ˜†

Maybe he's just trolling us?

If so, solid troll, gotta give it up.

Pawel likes jokes - he used "Am I Evil? Yes, I Am!" on his signature [1] for some time - I believe he just likes to mess with us :)

Maybe its about Eli from [2] the Bible?

... or maybe one of his friends/relatives had Eli name ...

But to be honest - as GELI is designed to keep secrets ... its funny that its name is also a secret :]

Man, I hope not, Eli in the bible was kind of a loser. ๐Ÿ˜…

I mean, he was nice to Samuel, but Eli's sons were slime, and he never stopped them.
