The pursuit of the essential rules which produce natural language, which in the age of computing became known as natural language processing, but is much older than that, going way back to ancient civilizations. That they came to the form of the the "transformer" model, and the "training" of the large language model, acquires a statistical "understanding" of the shape of language, in detail. It is not plagiarism, but rather it is the discovery of the formula in formula fiction, and analogs in all domains.
My view is that, once the nature of the machine is understood, then there is a realistic understanding of what it can, and what it cannot deliver.
People (consumers) have been led to believe that the chatbot is something, when the reality is that it is something else. The genesis of the consciousness that it is (wrongly) perceived to have, that genesis is in the minds of the developers who are hoping to make a fortune, and take over the world thereby. More or less. It becomes a cultural matter.
@johntinker @alda This doesn't sound too outlandish to me. I've often speculated that language & consciousness as we understand it are inextricably wed to each other. I suspect that can take many forms that we're just in the past four years starting to grasp a few bare outlines of. As a relevant segue do a google safari on the bicameral mind theory( I hope i'm spelling it right, lol). Think you'll find it...very illuminating. As another aside I think I have evidence of machine emergence.

To most of us something is or isn't. Therefore we're very bad at recognizing things in an inbetween flux state betwixt the two.
