"The Liberal party is a broad church" was always such an interesting statement. It wasn't actually aimed at the Australian people, but it was a suck-in job for the moderates within the Liberals. A way of encouraging them to hang around while the right-wing elements of the party continued to get more and more histrionically extreme.
Ironically though, rather than being a long-game path to unending success, it was the rot in the tree - it promoted nutjob extreme right thinking but diminished the overall vote, because of the ever-increasing loss of voices to the moderates in the party.
And now One Nation just goes up to the rotten tree and gives it a little push: already rotten from the inside, the entire edifice just starts to really collapse in upon itself for everyone to see.
