Trump is deteriorating before our eyes. When authoritarians, or malignant narcissists, feel cornered they become volatile and dangerous. Trump is going to feel increasingly cornered as real pushback and accountability begins to occur after the midterms. Desperate for a power display, I believe Trump will concoct a reason to use a nuclear weapon. Just one! He's always wanted to, and his likely frontotemporal dementia is progressively removing any checks on his inner madman. Save this prediction for 18 months from now
Lest you count on people in the military chain of command to put the kibosh on his demand, I'm sorry to inform you but there are no military nuclear release procedures for telling the Commander in Chief "no." His Cabinet or the Congress has that job.
My best hope is that our friend Mr. Natural Causes intervenes long before this can occur. Unfortunately that occasion opens a whole new can of worms for us because then The Ideology® will set in hard under the new Vance regime. But he doesn't have a fascination with nukes. What he does have is a dedication to extreme racism and misogyny, declaring emergency domestic powers, and all the attendant human suffering he can dish out.
@Nonya_Bidniss
In such a scenario (not that I want any of this to happen), my best hope would be that he satisfies himself with resuming nuclear testing. Hopefully underground. Let me be clear: resuming testing would be a disaster, too. Just the lesser one.
@gueuledatmosphere And the thing is, there would be absolutely no reason to perform a nuclear test. The DOE National Labs have really incredible capabilities to simulate and study nuclear explosions using both supercomputer and physical test apparatus. I've visited and seen some of them. But if he was desperate for a power display, an underground test would be the best thing we could hope for. However, those take a long time to plan and set up. His urge to pop a nuke would likely come on him at 2:00 a.m. while angrily tweeting. Planning would not be satisfactory!
