Idle power usage of my desktop on linux is significantly lower than on windows

Is anyone surprised by this? #linux

@nixCraft M$ spyware working overtime? 😆

@s7vns @nixCraft As soon as I leave my Windows computer like 5 minutes I can hear my fans go on and CPU usage goes towards 100%. I HATE IT.

Fortunately I have Linux on my main computer nowadays...

@s7vns @nixCraft Like how much data is M$ gathering and sending to their servers?? Also could be mining crypto as antoher comment said.. who knows.

M$ didn't help me disable telemetry, as excepted.... -__-

@John_Ligher @nixCraft No one truly knows since it's closed-source and cannot be audited. Officially? Only diagostic data which can be partially opted out from, but I've seen tiktoks of Windows users saying things like number of Start Menu clicks and number of certain files being opened is being recorded in registry.

@s7vns @nixCraft Someone on youtube used a software called Wireshark to see the packages sent.. but I never got that working (not sure how to set it up).

But as you say Microsoft can see everytime you start a certain software, like MS Paint (it was one of the piece of data from that youtube video)

@John_Ligher @nixCraft Not sure about MS Paint but I know for a fact that in rare cases Windows Calculator will attempt to make a connection to the internet. I haven't used Wireshark since College days. If I recall correctly you just install it on Windows and it will show a window where you can select your capture device. It has filters so you can select specific protocols you want to capture.
